Made a quick stop to see master Jose, who just flew back from Canada to see him at the shop.

Paulie and Jacob from Vinnie Styles ,NY flew in to get there grandmother’s portrait on the inner right bicept.

Paulie and Jacob, are true to their tattooing game , with dedicated sleeves done by master Toons, their work reaches beyond the norm. It’s always amazing to see true people who understand the meaning behind “for life”, and who are seriously invested into ink that is…

flawless….

timeless..

and…perfect! Jose and Cartoon, I salute you.

Under the Influence
Saturday, April 25th, 2009
What makes one a master of their craft? is a question that has been asked among hundreds of different societies and cultures for centuries. As artists and tradesmen we often look at the old masters of not just tattooing but ART in general to draw influence. Not only for reference but to study their life paths that unquestionably made them a success. One such artist that has had an inspiration on us as far back as we can remember is the disputable “Renaissance Man,” (title against Da Vinci) Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer.

His career is uncanny and cannot truly be summed up in words. His works include timeless sculptures such as the Statue of David, Pieta, The Ark of St Dominic, Bacchus, Brutus, Moses, and an endless list that could reach the stars he once looked to. Not to forget and credit his work of the Sistine Chapel and his many paintings as well. Michelangelo’s resume is one that speaks for more than just itself, it has stood the test of time.

Overwhelmingly breathtaking.

NTA 2009
Monday, April 20th, 2009
We had the honors of attending the most prestigious, and most ancient tattoo convention in Charlotte, NC- NTA: The National Tattoo Association of America. I landed Thursday night to meet up with the fam..

Thursday night jumped immediately into a feast. This would be the NTA’s 30th anniversary, with all the godfathers of tattooing like Brian Everett, Jack Rudy, Ed Hardy, and many more. As NTA tradition, the ceremonies and banquets filled our schedule for the entire two days before any tattooing began. The critics and entire organization of the NTA made up by and for the artists!

Contest and judging went on for hours, as some of the most craziest and way out shit you will ever see walked the stage–like this, she calls it ” The Universe on the left ass cheak!”

It is indeed, and check out the homey Bounty…

I like these paper towels for tattooing too, but damm!!

Beautiful..

tattoo.

And finally it was the family’s turn to show some skin, Manny, Ernie, and Mark all representing Jose’s work, Many wasn’t feeling the thong, so instead he had to show his bare, hairy ass to the public.

After the contests, an entire awards ceremony followed with announcements and recognitions for all the contestants.

A once in a lifetime pic, of all the old school greats, all artists who have been tattooing over 30 years, followed by the 20 years, and later– Ed Hardy-left, followed by Jack, Flo, Don, Tony Olivas and…

the rest! These men and women who started the tattooing industry in the US, and the ones who will carry it on, made me think, jesus! I got about 26 years to go!

All the contestants and supporters of the artist clamored together! After this the awards began, and so did the madness.

Category after category, from black n grey to overall artist, back and forth awards were being tossed at Jose! Poor guy had to be at two places at once, while several different magazines and photographers bombarded the man at one end, at the same time they awarded him another plaque at the other end! Many, Ernie, and Mark were juggling plaques as the entire table began to overflow!

The verdict: a groundbreaking 24 awards in black n grey, large, sleeve, overall and artist’s choice. Lowrider Tattoo’s first appearance at NTA, Jose breaks the record of most awarded artist! In the end, we had to thank Brian Everett again for his support, and Brian looked at us and and told us ” We started this game, now it’s you guys are going to determine where it’s going to go”. And I got to say again I am the luckiest kid on earth, and proud to be a student of Jose’s, Brian, and the all the leaders of this industry.

This shit just got started, so stay posted.Jun.

CATCHING UP
Friday, April 10th, 2009
“…We were scared because we thought she was going to take the baby away from us…Instead, when the social worker, Robin Vann, stopped by the house that night, it was to tell him that she and her husband wanted to buy Lopez a smaller wheelchair so he could move around better…”- OC WEEKLY 3-13/19-09

After reading the kind words expressed by Jose in the OC Weekly, Robin Vann and the Lopez family including Jose’s wife Corina and daughter Vanessa, were reunited after years of separation today. Robin took time off her day to pay Lowrider Tattoo a visit. With Jose’s most honest and heartfelt thanks and Robin’s most humble acceptance, it was a reunion full of smiles and laughs that was worth more than gold.
A prime example that compassion, empathy, and sincerity in our hearts still exists in people such as her, and in the world…Thank you again Robin for such a gesture of kindness and dropping by for a visit.
